Poorly designed or insufficient duct work can be a common cause of uncomfortable spaces, like bonus rooms. When the duct work is not fixable, zoning can often overcome the design issues and improve airflow to troublesome areas.
Bonus rooms are a common site of insufficient duct work, since they are added to the original floor plan after the home is built. Sometimes they are placed above unconditioned spaces like a garage. The room usually has less duct work than it needs. Additionally, bonus rooms are typically farthest away from the equipment. These rooms present a seemingly impossible comfort challenge.
