Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend the Pro Panel zone control for most zoning applications, including residential and light commercial systems. The Pro Panel is a full-featured zone control with an app that makes setup and diagnostics easier. It can create 2, 3, or 4 zone systems out of the box, and you can daisy-chain multiple Pro Panels together to build a system with up to 16 zones.

MPS is our zoning panel for simple zoning systems where cost is a major factor. This no-frills system makes zoning more affordable for single-stage equipment with a small number of dampers. MPS does not work with multi-stage equipment.

The AirBoss zone control has some unique features for light commercial applications. AirBoss comes in 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8 zones, so you can install an 8-zone system with just one panel. It also has a master setback switch to set back the temperature in all zones when a building is unoccupied.

The HeatPumPro zone control also works well with full-featured zoning applications in residential settings. It has most of the Pro Panel features, but does not offer app-guided setup. HeatPumPro is available for 2, 3, or 4 zones.

Find more information in our blog on how to choose a panel, our video explaining what the Pro Panel can do, or in our detailed product overview video. For information on custom panels or unusual applications, ask an application question or give us a call.

Yes, you can add zones to an existing Arzel zoning system with the use of an Arzel Smart Zone. However, a Smart Zone cannot turn the equipment on or off by itself. To satisfy a call from the panel, a Smart Zone piggybacks off of another zone and relies on it to communicate with the HVAC equipment.

You can install up to 35 dampers with one Arzel Zoning panel. Some of our larger dampers have more than one actuator, and if you are using those dampers, you should limit the system to 35 total actuators.

You can build an Arzel Zoning system with more than 35 dampers. We can install a second pump in the panel so that it can control up to 70 dampers. Talk to our technical support department about your application to see if this will work for you.

Yes, Arzel makes some dampers that you can install even when you don’t have access to all of the ductwork:

  • EzyFit dampers fold like a taco to fit through a register or another access point
  • InsertaDamper have a spring-loaded band that you can squeeze to fit around corners
  • RegiDampers are installed through the register

These dampers make zoning possible when you do not have access to the ductwork. Learn how they work in our blog about installing dampers in existing ductwork.

Use our specialty dampers to install zoning in finished basements. Just make sure you have a way to take the dampers out in case there is ever a failure. These dampers are good options when ductwork is not accessible:

  • EzyFit dampers fold like a taco to fit through a register or another access point
  • InsertaDamper have a spring-loaded band that you can squeeze to fit around corners
  • RegiDampers are installed through the register

Learn more about our damper options in our blog about installing dampers in existing ductwork.

Yes, Arzel Zoning makes custom damper shapes and sizes. We keep 75 different damper sizes in stock, so we may already have what you need. To find out more about custom sizes, talk to your local distributor or call us at (216) 831-6068. We make most custom dampers in 1-2 business days. Custom dampers ship from our Cleveland, Ohio shop.

We build most custom dampers in 1-2 days, and we ship them from Cleveland, Ohio. Call us at (216) 831-6068 for specific information on the damper you need and the shipping options available.

Arzel damper tubing can run up to 200 feet from the panel. If an application requires you to go further, contact Arzel technical support for additional solutions.

Arzel dampers produce virtually no sound because they do not have motors. Our competitors’ dampers have motors on each damper, so there is some sound in every damper location. Arzel dampers are powered by one small air pump in the panel box. This is the only source of noise for the system. When the panel is installed correctly, there should not be troublesome noise. Contact technical support if you are experiencing a noise issue, as this can sometimes indicate a problem with your pump or one of your dampers.

Arzel dampers are built with a gasket around the edge of the blade that creates a nearly airtight seal. This makes our zoning systems extremely effective because you aren’t wasting conditioned air on ducts that aren’t calling for it. Most zoning manufacturers do not add a gasket to their dampers.

The gasket seal is included with Arzel EzySlide, EzyFit, InsertaDamper, commercial dampers, and BalancePro dampers. The Arzel RegiDamper does not have a gasket seal, and we recommend using it sparingly in zoning systems to minimize air leaks.

Yes, you can upgrade your Arzel Zoning panel and keep your existing Arzel dampers in place as long as they are working well. All of our zoning panels are compatible with all of our zoning dampers:

  • Arzel Zoning panels: Pro Panel, HeatPumPro, AirBoss, MPS, and GTPro
  • Arzel Zoning dampers: EzySlide, EzyFit, InsertaDamper, RegiDamper, commercial dampers

However, our BalancePro damper is a manual balancing damper and it will not work with a zoning system. To upgrade your BalancePro damper to an automated zoning system, replace the BalancePro with an EzySlide damper. You can add additional dampers if you want more control. Then, connect the dampers to the zoning panel of your choice.

To see if your Arzel EzySlide damper is open or closed, find the yellow tab located on the part of the damper that is outside of the duct. The yellow indicator tab moves with the damper actuator, and it will be pointing to either open or closed.

If your Arzel damper is fully inside the ductwork, you’ll have to see the damper blade to know if the damper is open or closed.

If you suspect a damper is not working properly, see our troubleshooting guide or contact Arzel technical support for help diagnosing the issue.

Simple! A yellow indicator tab is located on the actuator and will be pointing to either open or closed. If the actuator is mounted inside the ductwork, the damper blade must be in sight to determine whether it is open or closed. If you suspect a damper is not working properly, see our troubleshooting guide.

Any standard 24-volt thermostat will work with an Arzel Zoning system, including battery-powered, power stealing, hard-wired or wireless, and smart thermostats. However, when you’re installing a heat pump with an AirBoss or MPS, you have to use a heat pump thermostat. We recommend the Pro Panel or HeatPumPro for heat pump systems. The Pro Panel and HeatPumPro can use a standard 24-volt thermostat with a heat pump.

Arzel’s zoning panels consist of an enclosure that contains a pump, control board, solenoids and temperature/humidity sensors. Communicating with the thermostats, the control board is able to communicate with your HVAC equipment and open or close the appropriate dampers. The dampers are air-driven and change position by applying pressure or vacuum from the pump. Learn more in our blog post: Understanding Modern Pneumatic Zoning Systems.

To pair Arzel Zoning systems with equipment that uses A2L refrigerant, you’ll need to add a relay that connects the Arzel panel to the A2L mitigation board on the equipment. See a more detailed explanation and download wiring diagrams in our article, A2L refrigerants and Arzel Zoning.

Yes, HVAC zoning works with multi-stage equipment. Zoning can actually make multi-stage equipment even more effective. We recommend the Arzel Pro Panel for multi-stage zoning applications. The Pro Panel controls the staging based on timers, temperature targets, and the percentage of ductwork that’s open. You can adjust all of these settings to dial in exactly the operation you want.
